First Check on the List - speeddating task completed
I did it. I just came back from a speeddating event. Girl number 3. Let me tell you about my night.
I got to the place about 7. Walked in and felt so uncomfortable. There were some people scattered around the place, all just looking around or sitting at the bar. I walk to the lady to register myself. With my note card and name badge I look around. Am I expected to go sit with the others? Should I go to the bar? To be honest, I don't want to do any of those things so I go sit by myself. Obviously I haven't thought it through because now I am sitting in the middle of the place all by myself, of course everyone is looking at me now. Y'all know that by now I am fighting the urge to get my book out and start reading. Rest assured I don't do that. Instead I take my BB and talk about the guy sitting there wearing a leather (more like pleather) suit jacket. After a few minutes I see the pleather guy go sit at my table so I know that avenue is closed. So I decide to go to the bar and get myself a drink and see if anyone comes to talk to me. No one does so I sit to the side sipping my orange juice.
The event finally start after what seems like hours but is in fact only 30 minutes. These are the guys in the order I spoke to them and the notes I took:
3 Premnath - from Sri Lanka, in the finance industry - boring
2 James - Project manager in the Army - only talked about his work
1 Steve - reader, favorite book les Miserables and would like to see that - might be too much into gym
13 Hanan - no notes as I know I don't want to remember - beyond boring
12 Sam - From Malaysia, old, kept saying he is enjoying since he met me - old pervert
11 Sergio - from Italy, talked about how stressful his job is because he is working while everyone is thinking holiday and that makes it difficult to get people to focus, long hair probably dyed - no way
10 Alpesh - just came back from travelling around the world, works in IT but wants to be a motorcycle mechanic, ideally he wants to do a bike holiday but needs to save for that
9 Mo - laughed a lot, has been before, this is third time, told him I want a library with rolling ladder he asked what I would wear when I need a book from the top shelf - no wonder he is here for the 3rd time
8 Mark - knows Curacao, went there on a cruise, wants to travel and meet stewardesses - stewardesses?
7 Mike - no recollection
6 Doug - ?
5 David - reader, he read the dragon tattoo books and likes them, he likes reading thrillers and crimes as well - not attractive but he likes reading
4 Paul - he is here because he wasn't interested in anyone in his first event so he got this one for free
Overall I liked the evening. It was different and I did laugh quite a bit. Those 4 minutes flew by. More entertaining than expected but exhausting at the same time.
Funny thing is that just about everyone is IT ... and only one likes his work. Everyone else is just doing it for the money. I think one of them, Alpesh, was trying to find out if Expedia was hiring.
So here is the big question: who do I tick as a Yes tomorrow or should I? Maybe I should just say I am not interested in anyone and get a second event for free.
Btw, I didn't stay for the socializing after. Maybe that says something.

it sounds like fun!
ReplyDeletei guess is in any case difficult to have an idea about anyone after such a short period of time. but i am really happy you had fun. good stuff :-)
if i would be you i will try to go for the second one try for free. i am sure it would be easier to handle for you and probably even more fun.
i think the goal is that, to have fun, right?
